About Rumney Marsh Conservancy

Rumney Marsh Conservancy, Inc. is a Massachusetts nonprofit corporation led by volunteers and dedicated to protecting and celebrating one of the North Shore’s most overlooked natural treasures. Rumney Marsh, a state-designated Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC), is home to tidal wetlands, migratory birds, and vital ecosystems that support our region’s environmental health.

Our mission is to raise awareness, share knowledge, and advocate for the marsh’s long-term protection. We highlight history, science, and current issues affecting the marsh through online content and community outreach. We work with local partners, scientists, and educators to make the marsh accessible and relevant to everyone, from lifelong residents to first-time visitors.

The marsh faces serious challenges. Reduced tidal flow from broken tide gates, blocked culverts, and the old highway embankment threaten its natural balance. Pollution from nearby industries, including the Saugus incinerator and its ash landfill, continues to impact air, water, and wildlife. These pressures make it even more important to involve the community and push for solutions that restore healthy tidal flow and reduce pollution at its source.

This is a community effort, and we welcome collaboration. Whether you are a student, a birder, a cyclist on the Northern Strand Trail, or a neighbor who simply cares about clean water and healthy ecosystems, Rumney Marsh Conservancy is here to connect you to this special place.

Rumney Marsh Conservancy, Inc. is a registered Massachusetts nonprofit corporation committed to transparency, accountability, and community-led stewardship of the Rumney Marsh Area of Critical Environmental Concern.
